Eva Marie Saint, one of the last major stars of Hollywood’s mid-century era, has died at 102.
Saint achieved immediate acclaim with her film debut opposite Marlon Brando in On the Waterfront, winning the Academy Award for supporting actress.
She later became part of another cinema landmark with Alfred Hitchcock’s North by Northwest, playing opposite Cary Grant in a role that remains one of the director’s most memorable female performances.
Her career was selective rather than constant, and that is part of the legacy. Saint stepped away from the machinery of the studio system at points to prioritize family while still building a body of work that lasted for decades.
How did an actor who made relatively few films leave such a large mark on Hollywood history?
