Microsoft and Nvidia are set to unveil the Surface Laptop Ultra, a Windows machine designed around Nvidia’s RTX Spark hardware and the idea that complex AI agents should be able to work directly on a personal computer.

That matters because today’s most capable AI systems usually rely on enormous cloud data centers. Moving more work onto local machines could improve latency, privacy and cost control for some users — while shifting hardware expense onto customers.
The biggest obstacle may be price. Reuters notes that surging memory costs have already pushed high-end AI hardware sharply higher. So the technology may be ready before the mass market is.
