DISPATCH OPINION · CULTURE & FREE EXPRESSION
A healthy culture leaves room for disagreement.
Americans do not need to agree on every political or cultural question to share a country. We do need the freedom to make arguments, question powerful institutions, and hear perspectives we dislike without pretending disagreement itself is a public emergency.
Our editorial position values free expression, personal responsibility, and strong families and communities. It also demands intellectual honesty: an argument does not become true because it comes from our preferred political side.
We should challenge ideas with evidence, resist dehumanizing rhetoric, and defend the right of others to reach different conclusions. Confidence in a viewpoint is strongest when it can withstand fair criticism.
