Wall Street’s mood turned sharply more cautious Thursday morning as two old forces — energy prices and bond yields — reasserted themselves. U.S. stock futures fell after a jump in oil and continued pressure from elevated Treasury yields revived concern that inflation could stay hotter for longer.

Brent crude pushed above $105 a barrel, while benchmark yields remained close to their highest levels in years. That combination threatens to squeeze the same market that has been celebrating AI-fueled earnings, because expensive energy and expensive borrowing costs tend to hit optimism fast.

The pressure was especially notable because it came after a strong run for major indexes. When rates and oil both move the wrong way at the same time, traders are forced to ask whether the market’s biggest winners can keep carrying everyone else.

For now, the story is less about panic than about friction. The market is still searching for proof that profits can outrun the cost of capital.

THE QUESTION

Can the AI trade keep holding up the broader market if oil and yields stay this elevated?
